Off-snow preparation · Individual by design

Your Fitness Should Support the Way You Ski or Ride.

Long days, repeated turns, variable terrain and demanding landings place different stresses on the body. The requirements also change with your discipline, speed, technical skill, equipment and time spent on snow.

A recreational skier preparing for a season, an experienced snowboarder and a competitive athlete will not automatically need the same programme.

Peter’s Integrated Performance approach starts by understanding the individual, then combines appropriate strength and conditioning, movement development and rehabilitative strategies where relevant. The goal is useful physical preparation—not a generic collection of “ski exercises.”

Different sports · Different demands

Skiing and Snowboarding Need More Than the Same Leg Workout.

Both sports draw on strength, coordination and conditioning, but the movement tasks, stance and exposure to load differ. Training priorities are individualised further by the type of skiing or riding you do.

Ski performance

Prepare for the Demands of Skiing.

Physical preparation for repeated turns, sustained lower-body loading, changing terrain and your chosen style of skiing.

  • Quadriceps and posterior-chain strength, including controlled eccentric loading
  • Single-leg control and side-to-side force management
  • Hip, knee and trunk control through relevant movement ranges
  • Work capacity for repeated runs and longer mountain days
Snowboard performance

Prepare for the Demands of Snowboarding.

Physical preparation that considers your stance, terrain, riding style and the loading demands of turning, absorbing force and landing.

  • Lower-body strength and control in varied stance and loading positions
  • Trunk and hip control for rotational and edge-to-edge tasks
  • Progressive landing, force absorption and power work when appropriate
  • Conditioning for the duration and intensity of your riding
Alpine, freestyle, freeride, touring or recreational days? The training plan is adapted to the actual demands and your experience. Off-snow physical preparation complements, rather than replaces, on-snow technical instruction.
What training may include

Develop the Physical Qualities That Carry Onto the Mountain.

Training emphasis changes by individual and season. These qualities are integrated rather than treated as a fixed checklist every client must complete.

01 / FORCE

Lower-Body Strength

Develop the ability to produce and control force through progressive bilateral and unilateral training.

02 / BRAKING

Eccentric & Isometric Capacity

Use appropriately dosed lowering, holding and force-absorption work to prepare for demanding positions and repeated loading.

03 / POWER

Explosive Performance

Develop rapid force production with suitable jumping, throwing and resistance-training progressions.

04 / CONTROL

Landing & Coordination

Progress movement control, balance and landing tasks in ways relevant to the individual’s goals and training readiness.

05 / MOVEMENT

Mobility & Trunk Control

Address relevant hip, ankle, thoracic and other movement requirements alongside strength through usable ranges.

06 / CAPACITY

Mountain-Day Conditioning

Build general and repeat-effort capacity around your typical run length, intensity, rest and total time on snow.

Assessment-led snow-sports coaching

Find Your Starting Point Before Building the Programme.

Assessment connects your physical training to what you want to do on snow. Your experience, goals, training history and relevant physical concerns guide the selection of useful measures.

  • Skiing or riding goals, discipline and seasonal schedule
  • Relevant injury history and present loading tolerance
  • Range of motion, movement quality and side-to-side differences
  • Lower-body strength and trunk control where relevant
  • Power, landing or conditioning measures when appropriate
Prepare · Perform · Rebuild

Training That Changes With Your Snow Season.

There is no universal timetable for preparation. Training is organised around your starting point, dates on snow, travel, competition and ability to recover between sessions.

Before the season

Build Your Base.

Establish relevant mobility and loading capacity, progress strength and introduce more demanding power or conditioning work as appropriate.

During the season

Maintain & Adjust.

Balance off-snow training with mountain days. Modify workload around fatigue, soreness, travel and changing snow-sports demands.

Between seasons

Address the Next Priority.

Review the season, rebuild where necessary and develop physical qualities that were difficult to prioritise while riding or skiing regularly.

Performance and rehabilitation together

Returning to Snow After Time Away or Injury?

General gym strength does not automatically mean someone is ready for repeated downhill loading, uneven terrain, landing or a full day on the mountain.

Where relevant, coaching can integrate movement development, graded strength and loading, balance and coordination, and a progression towards more demanding snow-sports preparation. Individual response guides what comes next.

Where medical assessment or clearance is needed, it remains part of the return-to-sport process. This programme does not replace medical diagnosis, rehabilitation oversight or on-snow coaching.

Training at The Studio

One-to-One Snow-Sports Preparation in Lake Hayes.

Work directly with Peter in a private indoor studio with resistance equipment and assessment space. The adjoining outdoor areas can support appropriate sled, movement and field-based training when useful for your programme.

Sessions are arranged around individual coaching—not an open-gym timetable or generic ski-fitness class. Use of the private studio during your booked appointment is included.

  • Indoor assessment and progressive resistance work
  • Outdoor movement and sled options when appropriate
  • Private, assessment-led coaching with Peter
Outdoor training is conditional: weather, ground conditions and the planned session determine whether outside work is suitable.

Common questions

Snow Sports Performance FAQ.

Practical answers about ski and snowboard physical preparation in Queenstown.

Is this for skiing, snowboarding or both?

Both. Training is adapted to the demands of your discipline, riding or skiing style, goals and starting point rather than treating skiing and snowboarding as identical.

Do I need to compete to benefit?

No. The service is suitable for recreational skiers and snowboarders, regular mountain users and athletes with more demanding performance goals. Training is scaled to the individual.

When should I begin preparing for the season?

There is no single start date. More preparation time allows greater scope for progressive development, but an appropriate plan can begin at any stage. Your snow schedule and current training status determine priorities.

Can I train during ski or snowboard season?

Yes. Off-snow sessions can be adjusted around your mountain days, competition, fatigue and recovery demands. The goal is to complement time on snow, not add unnecessary fatigue.

Will the programme help prevent injuries?

Training can develop relevant strength, movement control and physical capacity, but no programme can guarantee that an injury will not occur. Terrain, snow conditions, equipment, technique, fatigue and other factors also matter.

Can I start if I have knee, back or another physical concern?

Tell Peter about any symptoms, injury history or restrictions before training. Appropriate assessment and graded work may be integrated, while concerns that require medical assessment or clearance should be addressed with the relevant clinician.

Is this an on-snow ski or snowboard lesson?

No. This is off-snow physical preparation and performance coaching. It complements technical instruction from a qualified ski or snowboard coach rather than replacing it.

Where does training take place?

Private coaching takes place at Peter’s studio in Lake Hayes, Queenstown. Suitable outdoor training can be included when weather and ground conditions permit.

Is the snow-sports assessment free?

The comprehensive Integrated Performance Assessment is a paid 90–120-minute appointment. The complimentary 30-minute Free Consultation is a separate introductory conversation. See the Pricing page for current assessment and coaching options.

How do I book and what does it cost?

Begin with an enquiry or the Integrated Performance Assessment. Current assessment and coaching options are listed on the Pricing page.
