The Practitioner Behind the System

I’m Peter Rouse.

My work is built around a simple principle: understand the individual before deciding how to train or intervene.

Over more than three decades, I have worked across exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, personal training, manual therapy, rehabilitation and athletic performance.

Those disciplines have never existed separately in my practice. How a person moves, breathes, stabilises, generates force, recovers and adapts are connected parts of the same picture.

My role is to bring those pieces together, identify what matters for the person in front of me and develop a practical plan that can be measured and progressed.

Today, I work privately with clients from my Integrated Performance studio in Lake Hayes, Queenstown.

Professional Background

Experience Across the Full Spectrum
of Physical Development

My background combines the science of human adaptation with the practical experience of working directly with people, from those rebuilding basic physical capability to athletes preparing for international competition.

01 / HUMAN PERFORMANCE

Exercise Physiology

Applying an understanding of how the body responds and adapts to exercise, training load, recovery and physical demands.

02 / PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Strength & Conditioning

Developing strength, power, conditioning, movement efficiency and sport-specific physical qualities through structured progression.

03 / RESTORING CAPABILITY

Rehabilitation & Corrective Exercise

Working with movement limitations, injury history, reduced capacity and the progression from corrective work back into meaningful loading and performance.

04 / HANDS-ON PRACTICE

Manual & Neuroreflex Approaches

Incorporating appropriate hands-on techniques, neuroreflex approaches and sensorimotor interventions where they may help support movement, comfort and function.

05 / INDIVIDUAL COACHING

Personal Training

Translating assessment findings into practical coaching, exercise selection, technical development and programmes that fit the individual.

06 / LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT

Physical Longevity

Maintaining strength, mobility, coordination, resilience and physical independence across different stages of life.

Athlete to Practitioner

Performance Is Something I’ve Experienced, Not Just Studied.

My background as a professional athlete shaped how I understand the demands placed on the body.

Training is not simply about completing exercises. It is about developing the physical qualities required for a particular task while managing fatigue, limitations and recovery.

That perspective has stayed with me throughout my professional career. Whether someone is preparing for competition or wants to return to an activity they enjoy, the process must reflect their actual demands and starting capacity.

I have also learned that an approach that works in one environment cannot simply be copied into another. The individual always comes first.

The goal is not to make everyone train like an athlete. It is to apply sound performance principles to the person and the goal.
My Philosophy

Why I Developed an Integrated Approach

People do not arrive neatly divided into rehabilitation, fitness, strength and performance categories. Their goals and physical needs often overlap.

PRINCIPLE 01

Assess Before Prescribing

Begin by understanding the person’s goals, history, movement, physical capacity and relevant limitations rather than starting with a predetermined programme.

PRINCIPLE 02

Consider the Whole System

Breathing, joint function, muscle recruitment, motor control, strength, recovery and movement demands may interact. The assessment helps determine which factors are relevant.

PRINCIPLE 03

Integrate Rather Than Separate

Corrective therapy, rehabilitation, movement development, strength and conditioning can form parts of one individualised progression, rather than disconnected services.

PRINCIPLE 04

Reassess and Adapt

A plan is a starting hypothesis, not a fixed prescription. Progress, symptoms, performance and response to training guide what happens next.

How I Work

Your Assessment Shapes Your Programme.

I want to understand what your body can currently do, what may be limiting it and what needs to change to move towards your goals.

An Integrated Performance Assessment provides a structured starting point. The areas examined depend on your history, goals, presentation and the findings that emerge.

Goals, health and training history
Posture, breathing and movement
Joint mobility and range of motion
Muscle recruitment and motor control
Strength, stability and physical capacity
Relevant sport or lifestyle demands

The findings help establish priorities and guide an appropriate combination of intervention, coaching and progressive physical development.
